As Mr. Wager says, “Flo money, flo problems.” Florence has some problems and she needs your help to solve them. Let us help her solve the problem below using the Pythagorean Theorem.

Formula: Leg^2 + Leg ^2 = hypotenuse^2

1.) 12^2 + 35^2 = c^2

2.)144 + 1225 = c^2

3.)1369 = c^2

4.) square root of 1369 = square root

5.)  c = 37

Flo-Money’s says: DO THE MATH!

I think that we have completed the question and answer and helped Flo-Money solve her problems. We are AWESOME!

Battling Math Anxiety

Question: What is the number one tool that every high freshman needs in order to pass Algebra 1?

Answer: A pencil (just kidding).

Besides a sharpen writing utensil, all high school must have confidence in order to successfully pass Algebra 1. The core of algebra is solving for the unknown. Similar to a scavenger hunt, you only find all of the items on the list if you put forth the effort to complete the task and assure yourself that you have found all of the correct items. Without this confidence, you are short-changing yourself in putting your best foot forward.

As a math tutor, I can honestly say that it takes continuous practice to master a subject such as math. Trust me when I say that math is not difficult. Challenging? Yes, but never difficult. The only instance that math becomes complicated is if you do not use all of your resources. RAISE your hand, ask your teacher/tutor, ask a peer. When in doubt, your greatest enemy is silence.

USE your resources! You have them all around you. Teachers, peers, tutors, parents, relatives. They are all human resources. These people want you to succeed. They believe in you, but it is most important that you believe in yourself.

Practice math at your pace and I guarantee you will go far.

An operation involves two or more values producing a numeric result. There are two types of operations. Operations that involve a singular number is an unary. Operations that have more than one value are binaries.

PROBLEM

Using computation

Jessica worked as a dog-walker for 3 days a week for 120 weeks. How many days has Jessica walked dogs?

This is a three-step problem. Look at the problem and underline or highlight the information that you will need to solve the problem. For this problem, you know the following information:

  • Jessica works for 3 days a week
  • Jessica worked for a total of 120 weeks

Next, solve the problem by choosing an operation. Since you given a partial amount and a total amount, the best method to solving this problem is to use multiplication.

  • 3 x 120 = 360

Jessica walked dogs for 360 days.
