Simplify each product

*remember this shortcut:

(       )   (       ) when there are two parentheses, you are multiplying coefficients but you add the exponents.

(       ) when there is one parentheses, you are raising the coefficient to the power outside of the parentheses and        multiplying the exponent.

when you raise a negative coefficient to a power, you will receive a positive number. For instance,

multiply coefficients ( 2 x 4) = 8    add coefficients (3 + 2) = 5     add coefficients (y^2)

Find the area of the rectangle.

formula –> A = l x w

length: width:

1. Multiply coefficients

2. Add exponents of like terms (8 + 6 = 14)

3. Include the unlike term

4. Write your result:

ORDER OF OPERATIONS

PEMDAS, an acronym most students learn as early as the second grade. PEMDAS describes the order in which operations are organized.

Division (mathematics)

(    )Parentheses    2x Exponents x, *, (    ) Multiplication

÷, / Division    + Addition    - Subtraction

These operations are to be used with you evaluate an expression.

Examples

4(3x +5) – 12 —-> 12x + 20 – 12 —–>  12x – 8 —->  12x/12 = -8/12 —>

x = -1/3

An operation involves two or more values producing a numeric result. There are two types of operations. Operations that involve a singular number is an unary. Operations that have more than one value are binaries.

Unary-negation, trigonometry

Binary-addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and exponentation

PROBLEM

Using computation

Jessica worked as a dog-walker for 3 days a week for 120 weeks. How many days has Jessica walked dogs?

This is a three-step problem. Look at the problem and underline or highlight the information that you will need to solve the problem. For this problem, you know the following information:

  • Jessica works for 3 days a week
  • Jessica worked for a total of 120 weeks

Next, solve the problem by choosing an operation. Since you given a partial amount and a total amount, the best method to solving this problem is to use multiplication.

  • 3 x 120 = 360

Jessica walked dogs for 360 days.

Rules to remember for monomials

  • When you multiply coefficients, you add exponents
  • When you divide coefficients, you subtract exponents
  • When you raise an exponent to a power, you multiply exponents
